An order book strategy is only as good as the book it receives. Before you subscribe to a Level 2 strategy, or blame one for not trading, check that your NinjaTrader 8 data feed actually delivers what the strategy needs. Here is what that means and how to test it.

Level 1 versus Level 2

  • Level 1 is the last trade plus the best bid and best ask with their sizes. Most chart data is built from this.
  • Level 2, or market depth, adds the resting size at the levels behind the best bid and ask. A typical futures depth feed shows ten levels on each side.

Footprint charts and delta are built from trades classified as hitting the bid or the ask, which Level 1 tick data provides. Anything that reads resting size beyond the touch needs Level 2.

What an order book strategy needs

Live depth for the instrument you trade

Your subscription has to include market depth for the specific exchange and contract, for example CME for ES and NQ. Some data plans include only top-of-book.

Enough levels

Vantedge BookPilot's engine tracks the book from L1 to L10. Its Pressure Break sums the first 2 levels by default and its Pulled Wall scan uses levels 3 and 4 against a baseline out to the 10th. A feed that shows fewer levels limits what those scanners can see.

Steady, unthrottled updates

Signals like Pressure Break must hold for 250 ms by default. A feed that batches or drops depth updates gives a smoother, slower book than the real one.

Depth in your replay data

For testing, NinjaTrader's Market Replay data includes depth. Download it with Tools > Historical Data > Load > Market Replay.

How to check your feed

  • Open a SuperDOM for the instrument. It should show several levels with sizes changing on both sides.
  • Watch it during the busiest part of the session. Sizes should update constantly.
  • Load Market Replay data for a recent day and confirm the SuperDOM shows depth in replay too.

BookPilot has its own check: it refuses to arm if no Level 2 update has arrived in the last 5 seconds, and prints a message saying so. If you see "cannot arm -- no Level 2 data in the last 5 s", either your feed has no depth for the instrument or replay is paused.

Why Level 2 strategies cannot be backtested normally

NinjaTrader's historical bars store trades and prices, not the order book. That is why the Strategy Analyzer produces no trades for BookPilot: there is no book in the history for it to read. Testing happens in Market Replay instead, which replays recorded depth in real time. It is slower than a backtest, but it is the honest way to see what a book strategy does.

Costs and account details to check

  • Exchange data fees differ for professional and non-professional users. Make sure you are classified correctly.
  • Some prop firm accounts come with their own data arrangement. Check whether depth is included before you rely on it.
  • If you run the strategy on more than one machine, check whether your data subscription allows that.

When you do not need Level 2

If your feed does not include depth, or the extra cost is not worth it to you, a footprint strategy is the alternative. FlowPilot only needs tick data with bid/ask and can be backtested in the Strategy Analyzer with Tick Replay. The comparison page sets out the data requirements of both strategies side by side.

If you do have depth, BookPilot includes Vantedge BookScope for the chart, the Vantedge DOM Pressure Matrix as a SuperDOM column and Vantedge Footprint, and all three read the same feed.

Good data does not make futures trading safe, and losses can exceed expectations. Confirm your feed in Market Replay and run any Level 2 strategy on SIM before an evaluation, funded or live account.
