People shop for an "order flow platform" as if it were one product. In practice it is a stack of layers: a data feed, a trading platform, analysis tools, an execution layer and a way to test. Each layer has its own costs and limits, and a weak layer undermines the rest. Here is how the pieces fit for a NinjaTrader 8 futures trader.

Layer 1: the data feed

Everything starts with what your feed delivers. There are two levels to understand.

  • Tick data with bid/ask: every trade, with whether it hit the bid or the ask. This is enough for footprint charts, delta and bid/ask imbalances.
  • Level 2 market depth: the resting orders on each side, level by level, updated as they change. This is needed for anything that reads the order book itself: DOM imbalance, wall tracking, spoof detection.

Depth is usually an extra exchange data fee on top of top-of-book data. Before choosing any tool, check what your broker or prop firm connection actually delivers.

Layer 2: the platform

NinjaTrader 8 is the host for everything else. It handles charts, the SuperDOM, Chart Trader, the Strategy Analyzer and Market Replay, and it runs third-party indicators and strategies written in NinjaScript. Many futures prop firms connect to it, which is why so many order flow tools target it.

One NinjaTrader setting matters a great deal here: Tick Replay. Without it, historical bars have no bid/ask detail, and footprint-based tools show nothing on history.

Layer 3: analysis

This is the layer most people mean when they say "order flow": footprints, cumulative delta, absorption, DOM imbalance, wall tracking. Analysis tools inform a decision but leave it to you.

Vantedge's analysis tools are included with its strategies rather than sold separately. Vantedge Footprint shows bid/ask volume per price with delta shading, cumulative delta, imbalances, absorption markers and divergence alerts. Vantedge BookScope reads the Level 2 book, tracks walls, and shows the Pressure Break and Pulled Wall signals and a 2-tick micro-forecast.

Layer 4: execution

Turning analysis into orders is a separate problem. A discretionary trader clicks. An automated strategy needs explicit rules for entry type, bracket, position management and when to stop for the day.

The two Vantedge strategies sit here:

  • Vantedge FlowPilot uses layer 1's tick data only. It trades stacked footprint imbalances with market entries and a 16/16 tick bracket.
  • Vantedge BookPilot needs Level 2. It trades Pressure Break and Pulled Wall signals with limit entries behind the touch and a $150 / $100 per-contract bracket by default.

Both enforce a daily profit goal, a daily max loss and a cooldown after a loss, and both are controlled from a panel under Chart Trader.

Layer 5: testing

A platform you cannot test on is a platform you have to trust blindly. The data layer decides what testing is possible:

  • Footprint tools and strategies can be run over history in the Strategy Analyzer with Tick Replay.
  • Order book tools cannot, because historical bars carry no book. Market Replay, which replays recorded sessions including depth, is the way to test them, alongside SIM.

This is one of the clearest practical differences between the two Vantedge strategies, and the comparison page sets it out next to the rest.

Layer 6: risk, outside the logic

Treat risk as its own layer, not a setting buried in a strategy. Ask: where is the daily limit enforced, what happens when it is hit, and how do I flatten everything in one click? Prop firm rules add another set of limits on top. Your own settings should sit inside the firm's, with room for at least one full stop.

Assembling your stack

  • Decide whether you need Level 2. If not, a footprint-based stack is simpler and testable on history.
  • Confirm your feed and platform deliver what your tools need, including Tick Replay or depth.
  • Pick analysis tools you understand, then decide whether to automate execution.
  • Plan the testing route before you subscribe to anything.

A well-built stack still trades a risky market. Test each layer together on SIM, plus Market Replay for any Level 2 tool, before an evaluation, funded or live account.
